Miami: Visions of NowBY PAULA HARPER, Ph.D.Catalogue Essay for Miami: Visions of Now, curated by Carlos Betancourt, at the J. Johnson Gallery in Jacksonville Beach, FL, September 11, 2004 – October 29, 2004. Excerpt from Essay: “John Bailly has made his way to Miami from his birthplace in England by way of Paris and New York. He describes his recent work as a departure from previous tradition and law and his attempt to abandon control of form and subject. This seems a natural response to Miami’s open-ended and fluid ambiance. He combines and layers random images from the information overload to produce lush, expressive paintings that reveal glimpses of figures, symbols and buildings in a web of color and dynamic line. The density of his surfaces suggests encyclopedic palimpsests produced by a crowded, contemporary consciousness.” Paula Harper is Associate Professor of modern art history and criticism at the University of Miami. She has also taught at Cal Arts and Stanford, where she received her Ph.D. She has published two books, Daumier’s Clowns and Camille Pissaro: His Life and Work, many catalogue essays and articles, and regularly contributes features and reviews to Art in America. Her first career was as a modern dancer and an off-Broadway thearter producer in New York, where she also performed as a cabaret singer. |
