CLARION – The works of two visiting professors will highlight this year’s Faculty Art Exhibit at Clarion University’s Sandford Gallery.

John Bailly, a painter from Miami, and Kristin Nowlin, a mixed media artist from the Midwest will have their work displayed along with the work of seven other members of the Art Department faculty.

Dianne Malley, assistant professor of art and gallery director says, “The faculty show is always one of the most popular. People like to see what we’re working on.”

Bailly received his associate’s degree from the Miami-Dade Community College, bachelor’s in painting from Florida International University, and master’s in painting and printmaking from Yale University. He has participated in various solo and group exhibitions, most recently in Florida at the “Crossroads at the Tender Bridge,” at Miami-Dade Community College. His painting of lynchings in Rosewood recall dark days from that state’s past.

“A lot of my work is based on historical and cultural subject,” said Bailly. “I travel a lot, but I’m not a tourist. Rather, I view travel as a way to enrich my paintings.”

The three paintings he will show at the Sandford Gallery illustrate his sense of history. In “Congo Mercenary,” a portrait , Bailly shows how “you can expand yourself by going to a place that isn’t familiar at all.”

A second work is called “Achilles.” “I always liked the rage of Achilles,” he said. “This painting goes back and forth between how things look and how I feel they should look. This painting is a combination of both the visual and the abstract worlds.

Bailly’s third painting, not yet titled, shows “a man looking for answers that aren’t forthcoming,” he said. “The inspiration came from Derrida, a French philosopher who believes you are more of a conduit than a person.”
