“Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs.  Use vigorous English, not forgetting to strive for smoothness.  Be positive, not negative.” Ernest Hemingway

Guidelines to Format Papers (based primarily on MLA Style Manual)

  • Type your paper or write it on a computer and print it out on standard-sized paper (8.5 X 11 inches).
  • Papers must be stapled.  Do not use paperclips.
  • Set the font to 12-point Times New Roman.
  • Set the line spacing to double.
  • Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.
  • Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
  • Create a title block that is centered on the first page.

Defining the Real Goya:

A Comparison of the Spanish Genius and Canned Black Beans

The results of a recent survey of the population of Miami have created a cultural controversy.  The Black Bean Culture War has erupted out of contradictory claims to the appropriate use of the word "goya."  College professors regularly encounter student papers with goya references to food. "I like moros as much as the next, but I think Goya should refer to the Spanish painter." (Bailly 2).

  • A Title Page may be used, but do not number it.
  • Support material, such as illustrations, charts, etc, should be printed on a separate page(s) from the text.  These do not count as a part of page quantity guidelines.
  • All references to the works of others (whether directly quoted or simply read as an influence) must be documented in the format described in the MLA Style Manual. Youn can find help here: http://ottobib.com/
  • Keep a copy of your paper until the end of the semester.
  • All papers must be submitted in both hardcopy and electronic format.  The hardcopy is for me; the electronic copy should be submitted to http://www.turnitin.com/
  • Papers must be turned in to turnitin.com by 11:59pm on the date they are due.
  • Please do not submit your paper as an email attachment.  It will be deleted.
  • “Students should be aware that papers will be submitted and that they will reside in Turnitin’s database.” Ken Johnson, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs
  • Generally, include a conclusion that summarizes the main points of your paper.
  • And most importantly – BE CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL.

NOTE: Alternative methods of completing projects are strongly encouraged.  If you wish to write a poem or short story or make a painting, video, sound recording, etc, you must first get approval form your instructor.
