LA RÉVOLUTION FRANÇAISE:
NEWSPAPERS

Gracchus Babeuf. Le Tribun du Peuple, 1795.
Project Description
The following guidelines are for newspapers created for the Reacting to the Past game, Rousseau, Burke, and Revolution in France, 1791 by Marc C. Carnes and Gary Kates.
Content & Structure
You should read and reread the “Clubs and Newspapers” section of the game book (p. 41-44). This clearly describes your organizational structure and written requirements. Every faction should select a Newspaper Editor and delegate topics to members immediately.
Some main points to remember:
- The formation of a Club and the name of its Newspaper Editor must be announced on our class discussion board.
- The Newspaper Editor of each club may reject any submission, whether the submission is from a member of the club or from outside.
- Rejected submissions may be presented to other newspapers. Submissions that are refused should be sent directly to the Gamemasters.
- Anyone may leave a Club or form a new Club at any time.
- Although the topics listed on p. 43 & 44 should be addressed, newspaper writings are in no way limited. You may write about any topic you feel is important (slavery, art, international relations, etc…).
- Due to the size of our class, newspapers do not need to be printed. They should be presented in the form of a webpage. Every student’s writing should appear on a separate webpage that is then linked to the Editor’s main page.
- Although the essence of your newspaper must be the writing, you may also use images, music, or videos. Remember to properly cite these.
- FIU provides free web hosting space for students. You may, however, use any web host that provides access to everyone.
- Please make sure you properly cite all sources.
- All writing done for a newspaper (or sent to the Gamemasters) must ALSO be submitted to turnitin.com.
- Gamemasters will determine winning newspapers for each issue. Winning Clubs will be awarded 50 delegates. Delegates will be distributed to Club members by the Editor.
Editorial Introduction
Newspaper Editors are responsible for organizing submissions in a front-page editorial introduction. This page should consist of the newspaper title and issue number (see samples below). This will be followed by an introductory paragraph that will contextualize the various articles in terms of historical issues and ideas discussed, and organize the newspaper by connecting the articles to these issues and ideas. This paragraph will in turn be followed by a paragraph for each submission, succinctly describing its main argument and/or purpose, and providing a link to the article’s webpage.
